ICP-OES Spectrometers
ICP-OES (Inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry) is a technique in which the composition of elements in samples can be determined using an argon plasma and a spectrometer and it is mainly used for liquid samples. To analyze the sample, it needs to be turned into an aerosol (“nebulization”) which is injected into the plasma. Solid samples can be analyzed directly if a method for vaporization is available using laser ablation or electrothermic vaporization (ETV). The high temperatures in the plasma are sufficient to atomize and ionize the sample and provide the energy for excitation.
For practical analysis using ICP-OES, several essential components must be provided:
- A sampling system designed to introduce the sample into the plasma
- An energy source to atomize/ionize the sample and excite the atoms and ions for the emission of radiation
- A high resolution optics to observe the emissions from the plasma and to separate and isolate the specific emitted wavelengths for the elements to be measured
- A detection system for measuring the intensity of light emissions
- Electronics for acquiring detector signals and controlling the functions of the spectrometer
- A computer with software for calculating and displaying emission spectra and concentration values
